Can I rent a car after being refused finance?

Why finance said no but hire can say yes
Car finance underwrites the full value of the vehicle over several years, so it leans heavily on your credit history — one default, CCJ or a thin file can trigger an automatic decline. Short-term hire only ever commits the partner to a few months at a time, so the risk is far lower and the question is simpler: can you comfortably afford the monthly now? That difference in how the two are assessed is exactly why a finance refusal doesn’t carry over to hire.
A finance decline also isn’t a black mark that hire partners “see and copy”. They make their own assessment of your situation, weighted towards affordability today rather than the reason finance said no.
What a finance refusal does — and doesn’t — mean for hire
It doesn’t rule you out. What it usually signals is that a lender wasn’t comfortable extending credit over a long term — a different decision from renting you a vehicle for a while.
