**A lease or hire agreement sets an annual mileage allowance you agree upfront. Go over it and you pay an excess-mileage charge, a set pence-per-mile rate, for every extra mile, worked out when you hand the car back. Estimating your real annual mileage accurately is the way to avoid a surprise bill.**

## How mileage allowances work

When you take out a lease or longer hire, you agree an annual mileage, common bands are 8,000, 10,000 or 15,000 miles a year. The allowance is one of the biggest levers on your monthly: a higher limit costs a bit more each month but buys you headroom. The figure is a total across the whole agreement, so a good year and a quiet year can balance out, it is your average that matters, not any single month.

## What are excess-mileage charges?

If you drive more than your total allowance over the agreement, you pay an excess-mileage charge for each mile over. It is a fixed pence-per-mile rate written into your agreement at the very start, so there are no surprises about the rate, only about how many miles you rack up. Rates vary by vehicle, and are typically higher on premium and prestige models. It is charged once, at the end, when the actual mileage is confirmed.
