"You need credit to lease a car" is one of those things everyone repeats, and it puts a lot of people off before they even ask. It is only half true. A traditional lease or finance deal does lean on your credit history, but short-term hire does not work that way. If you are young, new to the UK, or have simply never borrowed, you are not a risk to be scored; you are a driver who needs a car, and hire is built to say yes to exactly that.
Why "no credit" is not the same as "bad credit"
An empty file is not a black mark, there is just little for an agency to score. Finance treats that uncertainty as risk and often declines; short-term hire treats it as normal, because the decision is about affordability and ID, not a long credit track record. Often, yes. Short-term hire is judged on ID and affordability rather than a credit record, so having no history is far less of a barrier than it is for finance or a traditional lease.
Will leasing help me build credit?
